Glass bottles can break if they shift or collide during transit. A sturdy box, individual wrapping and secure cushioning help reduce that risk. Whether you are shipping beverages, cosmetics, oils or other glass products, use these steps to prepare the parcel.
Make sure the bottle is in good condition and its cap or closure is tightly secured. If it contains liquid, place it in a sealed, leak-resistant bag and add absorbent material around it. Check your courier’s rules before shipping: some carriers restrict certain liquids or require specific packaging.
Wrap every bottle in several layers of bubble wrap, covering the base, sides and neck. Secure the wrap with tape. Keep the bottles from touching one another, even when they are inside the same parcel.
Select a box that fits the wrapped bottles with room for cushioning, but does not leave so much space that the contents can move around. Use a new, sturdy corrugated box with no crushed corners, weak seams or water damage. For heavier or especially fragile bottles, consider a stronger box or double-boxing.
Place cardboard dividers between bottles to keep them separated. Add cushioning material to the bottom of the box before placing the bottles inside. Fill the gaps around and between them with bubble wrap, kraft paper or other suitable cushioning so the bottles stay in place.
Add cushioning above the bottles too. There should be no empty space where the contents can shift when the box is gently moved.
Close the box temporarily and gently tilt or move it. If you can feel or hear the bottles shifting, open it and add more cushioning. Keep the bottles upright when the product and courier requirements allow it.
Close the flaps and seal all openings with strong packing tape. Reinforce the centre seam and the edges, especially on heavier parcels. Add the shipping label clearly, and follow the courier’s instructions for any handling labels.
Careful packing helps protect glass bottles, but no packaging can guarantee that a parcel will not be damaged. Use suitable corrugated boxes, dividers, bubble wrap and packing tape for your product, and follow your courier’s packaging requirements.
